Additional rules for Motorcycles, and Tri-Cycles

Note: Quad-bikes are not allowed on public roads!
Motorcycles and motor tri-cycles must comply with all the applicable rules of the road already covered in this chapter.
The following are some additional rules that apply specifically to motorcycles and motor-tri-cycles:
- Off-road motorcycles may not drive on public roads unless they are duly licenced and comply with the law.
- The driver and any passenger must always wear a suitable safety helmet.
- The headlights must be kept on at all times, day or night, when riding on a public road.
- Always keep both feet on the footrests and sit astride the saddle (one leg on each side).
- A motorcycle with an engine capacity of 50 cm3 or less is not allowed to carry a passenger.
- Motorcycles of 50 cc or less are not allowed on freeways.
- A passenger must sit astride the saddle with both feet on the footrests, or must be seated in a side-car.
- Not more than 2 people are allowed to be seated on
a motorcycle, and not more than 2 adults may ride in a side-car.
- You are not allowed to carry any person, animal or
bulky object on a motorcycle in such a way that it obstructs the
rider’s view ahead or their ability to control the motorcycle.
- Motorcycles must be ridden in single-file on the road. (A lane is regarded as a road.)
- Only one motorcycle at a time may overtake another vehicle travelling in the same lane.
- You must always keep at least one hand on the handlebars.
- All the wheels must remain in contact with the road surface at all times.
- A motorcycle must have one number plate secured on the rear of the vehicle.
- A motorcycle or motor tricycle is not allowed to tow another vehicle.
Carrying loads on motorcycles:
Load projection limits:

not more than 600 mm to the front of the front axle
- not more than 900 mm to the rear of the back axle
- not more than 450 mm to the side of the motorcycle wheels
- not more than 300 mm to the side of the side-car wheel.
- Mirrors and crash-bars are not regarded as loads and are not subject to these limits.
- It is not permitted for any person, animal or
article to be carried in front of the driver on the seat, fuel tank or
handlebars.
